Altar Stones is a heathland site largely absent of areas of open water.

The creation of a new pond, at a cost of £2,000, would help increase biodiversity across the site, creating a habitat for a wide range of wetland species such as dragonflies and water-borne invertebrates.

The acidic nature of the area would also create ideal conditions for the palmate newt, which is present in small numbers in the Charnwood forest.

The area earmarked for a new pond is a flat area of relatively rank grass, so the grassland biodiversity of the site would be unharmed.
