Wildlife stars lead the charge to Birdfair extravaganza

Tens of thousands of nature lovers from all over the world are set to descend on Rutland Water Nature Reserve for the 30th annual Birdfair (Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August).

Chris Packham, Iolo Williams, Mike Dilger, Simon King, Mark Carwardine, Jess French, Nick Baker, Lizzie Daly, Nigel Marven, and David Lindo are among the wildlife TV presenters that will entertain the crowds throughout the three days.

Birdfair brings together wildlife enthusiasts from 70 countries around the world, all in aid of raising money for vital wildlife conservation work. Since the first event in 1989, the fair has raised more than £5 million helping to save countless species.

The 2019 Birdfair will raise funds in support of BirdLife International’s project to create a haven for Argentina’s flamingoes at the Mar Chiquita salt lake – an ambitious plan to mark 30 years of Birdfair.

The 2019 extravaganza features fascinating talks across four lecture marquees and more than 500 stalls selling a variety of wildlife-related goodies, from binoculars, books to holidays.

Birdfair founder and Manager Tim Appleton said: “It’s hard to believe it was 30 years ago that we hosted the first ever Birdfair, and since then more than £5 million has left the tiny county of Rutland and changed the fortunes of many species of birds and other wildlife.

“This year we’re expecting Birdfair to be bigger and better than ever. We are delighted that so many of the well-known TV personalities are joining us and showing their support for what is now seen as the largest wildlife event on the planet, and the programme is packed with more than 180 really interesting talks and the marquees are the place to be for all your nature shopping needs.”

Tickets will be on sale at the entrances each day or you can buy on-line in advance. Birdfair entry tickets cover visiting the exhibition marquees and attending the talks during the day. On the Sunday Wildlife Trust and RSPB members can purchase discounted tickets (when showing membership cards on entry).

The full programme of events is available on the Birdfair website and you can follow @TheBirdfair on Twitter and Like Birdfair on Facebook for news and updates.
