Big Wild Walk - FAQs

What is the Big Wild Walk?

The Big Wild Walk is The Wildlife Trusts' annual fundraising challenge where we ask nature-lovers to set themselves a distance target and raise money for our vital work. Fundraisers can walk, cycle and even swim!

Where does the Big Wild Walk take place?

You can do your Big Wild Walk anywhere you like! The Big Wild Walk is a virtual fundraising event, meaning that you are able to complete your challenge wherever you wish.

It can be somewhere you know well, or you can use the opportunity to visit one of our reserves - maybe try somewhere completely different!

Do I have to do one of the suggested challenges?

Nope! The suggested challenges are themed around our 30by30 goal - which is why we chose 30km. But the Big Wild Walk a completely flexible fundraising event, which means you get to choose your own challenge.

  • Choose the distance of your Big Wild Walk – 30km, 15km, 3km, it’s entirely up to you!

  • Go as slow or as fast as you want – Complete your goal over 7 days, or run it in one hour!

  • Even take part from the comfort of your own home – complete your Big Wild Walk however you want.

I want to take part, but I struggle with mobility.

Wheelchair users and other mobility aid users are encouraged to sign up and take part just as much as everyone else.

The Big Wild Walk is a completely flexible fundraising event*, and you can set the distance of your challenge to whatever feels realistic for you.

Completing your Big Wild Walk
  • Complete your challenge using any mobility aids you typically use in your day-to-day life.

  • You know yourself better than anyone – so set yourself a reasonable challenge that's suited to your abilities.

  • If you want to find an accessible nature reserve, visit www.wildlifetrusts.org/nature-reserves. You can use the filters or contact sites directly to find out if a reserve is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilets.

* See the above question, ‘Do I have to do one of the suggested challenges?’

What if I don’t have access to nature?

We encourage everyone to get out in nature if they can, however we understand that wild spaces aren’t accessible to everyone (just yet).

If you don’t have access to a wild space, you can complete your challenge wherever you can. You could:

  • Go for a walk through the city

  • Walk or cycle to work every day throughout the Big Wild Walk week

  • Do a few laps of the car park on your lunch

  • Visit the gym and walk on a treadmill

If you want help or advice with finding local walking routes, you could:

How do I sign up?

You can create your fundraising page through Just Giving, or by any other fundraising platform you prefer

Do I have to pay to take part?

Nope, it's completely free to take on the Big Wild Walk challenge.

Can I take part with children?

Yes you can - anyone can take part in Big Wild Walk! Of course, always take the appropriate safety precautions when walking long distances or anywhere ‘wild’ with children.

If 30km looks a bit far for little legs, you might want to try a shorter distance, such as a Hedgehog Walk. The target distance for a Hedgehog Walk is 3km, which you could do in a day or across the week. 3km is the distance that a hedgehog can travel in one night!

How do I create or join a team?

Why not take your challenge to the next level by taking part as a team, either with friends or through work? As a team you can inspire and support each other - or you can create a challenge of your own! Taking on a challenge together can build trust, encourage creativity, improve morale, enhance communication, boost motivation and inspire collaboration.

You can register your team on a Just Giving Fundraising page, or you can choose to use another fundraising platform if you prefer?
