Get involved with wildlife in 2012
Posted 4th January 2012
It is the traditional time of year for making resolutions so may we make a few suggestions?
Resolve to visit our nature reserves. It is said that a brisk two-hour walk can burn off more than 500 calories! Check our Nature Reserve pages for details on when they are at their best and maybe visit a different reserve each month. At this time of year a visit to Rutland Water Nature Reserve (permit required) is virtually a ‘must’ for a good walk and to see plenty of wildfowl. Cossington Meadows in the Soar Valley is another good bet and, at dusk, you could spot a short eared owl.
Resolve to help wildlife in your garden. A good start would be simply to feed the birds and provide clean water. Vine House Farm works in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts and will donate five per cent of every sale of bird feed and associated products to someone in the Leicestershire and Rutland region to the Trust. Click here for more details. Also, if you are going over to Rutland Water Nature Reserve, the shop at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre also has a good range of feed and feeders for sale.
Resolve to get involved with one of the Trust’s local groups. Charnwood, Great Bowden, Humberstone, Melton Mowbray, North West, Oadby & Wigston and Rutland organise monthly indoor meetings from autumn to spring and represent the Trust in their local community. See our Local Group pages for more information.
Resolve to get involved with the work of Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. Volunteers make a vital contribution each year helping the Trust to protect wildlife and wild places in our two counties. The more volunteers we have the bigger the difference we can make. We have plenty of opportunities on our nature reserves - from helping out at one of the visitor centres at Rutland Water to getting your hands dirty on practical conservations tasks. See our Volunteer pages for further information.
Whatever you resolve to do to get involved with wildlife in the year ahead, all at the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust wish you a Happy 2012!
