Sponsor a cow this Christmas

Posted 23rd November 2011

Looking for an unusual gift this Christmas – then why not sponsor a cow for those family and friends who seem to have everything?

The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust runs a Sponsor a Cow scheme to support their two herds of rare breed cattle. This year some of the cattle are starring on You Tube in order to help drum up support.

Senior Conservation Officer Neil Pilcher said, “Earlier this year whilst checking some of the cattle a new born calf was running around and clearly enjoying his life in the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust herd. Luckily I had my camera with me to capture the moment.  Now you can share this, and see how cute he is, on You Tube.”

This and other videos of the cattle grazing on Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust nature reserves can be found at the following links:

Careful grazing is a critical part of grassland management, creating the right conditions for wildlife to flourish by keeping down coarse vegetation, which would overwhelm rarer, more delicate plants.  The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust manages a variety of important grassland sites including heath-grassland and neutral grassland.

Sponsoring a cow will help the Trust manage these important habitats and helps us care for the cattle, including:
