Join us in our Glow Worm Monitoring Project!
We're calling on the public to assist us in tracking glow-worms across Leicestershire and Rutland this summer, both in local areas and our Nature Reserves. Glow worms, famous for their bioluminescence, emit a vibrant green light from their abdomens to attract mates. Look out for them in roadside verges, woodland tracks, disused railway lines, and local parks, as these serve as suitable habitats for their thriving population.

Why are we recording Glow Worm sightings?
Sadly, glow worms are experiencing rapid declines in the UK, with reports indicating up to 75% decreases in the southern regions over the past 20 years. Habitat loss, light pollution, and climate change are major contributing factors. To understand the status of glow worms in Leicestershire and Rutland better, we urge you to report any sightings during your evening walks as part of 30 Days Wild in June.
Help us by providing as much information as possible, including location (preferably What3Words), the number of glowing females spotted, and a brief habitat description. Share your sightings through our website by pinning your sighting on the map or by emailing info@lrwt.co.uk. Together, we can contribute to the conservation of these fascinating creatures.
